Meet Tom Mesyn

Detroit born Tom Mesyn said he knew the draft was imminent. He wasn’t in college, he didn’t have any kind of deferment, it was inevitable in his eyes. What he didn’t expect was for a Marine in dress blues to walk in during his 1966 induction and cherry pick the finest young men in the room to become Marines. First in and last out. He shared great stories and anecdotes, but it’s evident there is much more beneath the surface. Looking at his images, it’s easy to see. Even though he’s usually smiling and joking, when it comes to his time in Vietnam there’s a sadness.

Look and Listen

These days...

Although he’s frustrated at the way the war was handled, or mishandled and says there were so many mistakes that cost soldiers their lives, Mesyn often wishes he would have stayed in the Marines. He said he could have retired a long time ago with a full pension. He came home, got back to work eventually opening his own construction business which he still owns and operates. He married his wife Donna and they live in Clinton Twp., Michigan. He’s a father to six children, one of which is my husband, and “Grampy” to ten grandchildren (two are mine). He’s also one of my heroes.
